BINGHAMTON, NY (607NewsNow) – A Navy veteran in Binghamton is being recognized for a lifetime of service.

On April 17, State Senator Lea Webb presented Lieutenant James Alexander Jr. with the New York State Liberty Medal.

Alexander joined the Navy’s V-12 College Training Program before serving aboard the USS Denver in the Atlantic during World War II. After returning home, he continued to serve his country as an electrical engineer with IBM’s Federal Systems Division, where he worked on military and aerospace projects during the Cold War.

Additionally, Lieutenant Alexander served his community for more than 30 years as a certified referee for high school and college sports, including football and hockey. He was instrumental in training local referees after the ice rink in Grippen Park opened and is accepted as a major contributor to Broome County’s lasting hockey community.

“I am deeply honored to present the New York State Senate Liberty Medal to James Alexander, a true American hero whose life reflects a remarkable legacy of service,” said Webb. “Jim answered the call to serve during World War II in the United States Navy, demonstrating courage at a pivotal moment in our nation’s history. Here in Broome County, Jim served as a referee and mentor, helping to build a strong and lasting local sports community. I am profoundly grateful for his service and proud to honor him.”

James celebrated his 100th birthday in November 2025. The New York State Liberty Medal is the highest civilian honor that a member of the State Senate can bestow. You can read the full resolution accompanying Alexander’s award here.
