CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) – SUNY Cortland is welcoming the class of 2029.

Roads are busier and businesses are buzzing with the arrival of students, who began moving into dorms on August 21.

According to the college, 18,355 first-year students applied for the fall semester, which is a record. President Erik Bitterbaum says it’s a reflection of the “world-class education” students receive at Cortland.

Of the 1,395 freshmen, 85% have completed advanced placement, international baccalaureate, or honors-level courses, and 81% participated in athletics. The class of 2029 also features eight valedictorians, four salutatorians, and 265 people who identify as bilingual.

Though the class represents 15 states outside of New York, the most common home counties are Suffolk, Nassau, Westchester, Onondaga, and Erie.

A pop-up ReUse sale for students is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Saturday at the Student Life Center.

The college has been collecting gently used items at the end of the school year since 2022 to reduce waste in landfills. This past spring, an estimated 40 tons of material was diverted from landfills.

For the past 14 weeks and counting, the top Billboard spot has been held by a love ballad: Alex Warren's "Ordinary." As Berklee College of Music professor and forensic musicologist Joe Bennett notes, the February release is "a fair bit slower than the mean average for the Hot 100, or for a historical song of the summer."
