OWEGO, NY (607NewsNow) – A phone scam is making the rounds in Tioga County.

The Sheriff’s Office has received reports that a caller posing as a local Sergeant is contacting residents.

The scammer tells the victim they’ve been indicted, and a warrant is out for their arrest, adding that if a fee is paid, it will clear up the warrant. Sheriff Gary Howard says his office will never request money from individuals over the phone.

Sheriff Howard asks anyone who receives this call to hang up and call the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office at (607) 687-1010.
