OWEGO, NY (607NewsNow) — Chickens remain a focus in the Village of Owego.

A law is being crafted that would ban the keeping of roosters. Domestic hens would be allowed, though property owners would have to obtain a permit.

Under the proposed law, hens must be provided a secure coop and fenced area. No front yard coops would be allowed.

Violators of the law would first receive a warning from the village’s code enforcement office. If corrective action isn’t taken, fines of up to $250 per violation may be administered.
