CHEMUNG, NY (607NewsNow) – A fatal incident involving an officer is under investigation.

On September 28, State Police were called to a domestic dispute on Rotary Road in the Town of Chemung around 3 p.m.

Troopers say 18-year-old Nathan Novakowski was threatening a woman with scissors when they arrived, and Novakowski “became increasingly agitated” with law enforcement’s attempts to de-escalate the situation. Novakowski allegedly attempted to stab the victim and was fatally shot by a trooper.

As required by law, both the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the New York State Attorney General’s Office are investigating.

The female victim was treated for minor injuries.
