ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) — The city of Ithaca is paying tribute to Dolly Parton’s memory and legacy.  The Downtown Ithaca Alliance has announced a plan to honor Parton’s commitment to child literacy.

“Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library gives 3 million books per month to children to inspire a love of reading. The DIA is honoring Dolly Parton’s legacy by doing a book drive to supply children’s books and create children’s libraries in the community rooms in four of INHS’ family residences,” the DIA said in a statement to 607 News Now.

If you have new or gently used children’s books, you can drop them off at the DIA’s tent during the next three Thursday night concerts on the Commons (Aug. 27, Sept. 3, and Sept. 10) from 5-8 p.m., or at one of Ithaca’s three independent bookstores (Autumn Leaves, Buffalo Street Books, and Odyssey Bookstore). The DIA says those stores are also offering a 20% discount and drop off boxes at their stores now through Sept. 10.

“INHS is so grateful for this collaboration with the DIA as we focus on resident and family wellbeing and stability in our communities,” Kate de la Garza, executive director of INHS said. “Providing books to families with children and in our community rooms will directly support folks as we begin the school year here.”

“We felt compelled to honor this legendary female singer-songwriter who changed the face not just of the music industry, but for working women everywhere, “DIA CEO Nan Rohrer said. “Dolly Parton’s passion for music and children’s literacy is a reminder of what it means to be part of a community, and the DIA is humbled to play our part in giving back.”

Parton died Tuesday at the age of 80.
