CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) – A family of ducks is safe in the City of Cortland.

On June 5, Fourth Ward Alderperson Patricia Lane says she received a call from a neighbor after they discovered a distraught mother duck sitting on a grate near Neubig Hall on the SUNY Cortland campus.

The duck’s offspring had fallen through the grate.

Lane phoned Mayor Scott Steve, who responded to the scene and called the Cortland Fire Department. Firefighters showed up to remove the grate and recover the ducklings.

“She yelled at them all the way [as they left],” said Lane. “So that was the happy ending.”

 

Mayor Steve added it was the second duck rescue in that week for the crew on duty, and the city hopes to plan some kind of recognition for their efforts.
