ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – A discussion on dredging the Cayuga Lake inlet is cancelled.

The DEC had originally planned to attend the May meeting of the Tompkins County Planning, Energy, and Environmental Quality Committee to discuss the potential project.

Committee members had requested the agency’s presence to give a presentation and ask questions before the recent closing of a public comment period regarding a dredging permit application submitted by the DEC’s Bureau of Flood Protection and Dam Safety. That meeting was pushed to June and ultimately canceled.

Committee Chair Irene Weiser tells 607NewsNow the committee sent in their comments, one of which asked for a public information session. Wesier says they remain hopeful the DEC will hold such a session later this summer after reviewing comments received.

In recent years, growing concerns about flooding have increased calls for dredging. Critics of the move point to the potential negative impact it could have on lake health.
