ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) — Two men from Florida are accused of scamming an elderly couple in Ithaca out of over 20 thousand dollars.

The two men were arrested last Tuesday after an Uber driver called state police about a package with $23,000 in cash that was picked up in Ithaca to be delivered in Onondaga County. The driver told troopers he believed the money was from a scam, which was later confirmed by investigators.  The two suspects allegedly posed as the jailed nephew of the couple, who say the cash was bail money. More cash was discovered in the pair’s hotel room. State Police say more than $34,000 in U.S. currency was recovered in total.

39-year-old Yoelvis Reyes and 45-year-old Mario Escalante have been charged with criminal possession of stolen property, which is a felony.
