CORTLAND, N.Y. (WHCU) – A Cortland County woman is facing six felonies after an investigation into welfare fraud.

Authorities with the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office and Department of Social Services (DSS) arrested 36-year-old Valkyrie Niles, of Cincinnatus, on Monday and charged her with four counts of offering a false instrument for filing, grand larceny, and welfare fraud. Niles is accused of failing to provide the required information about household income to the Department of Social Services from June 2020 through December 2022. That resulted in more than $23,000 dollars of benefits she was not entitled to. Niles is scheduled to answer to the charges in court on September 27.
